How Do You Tell Real Leather From Synthetic on Designer Bags?

Smell and Touch
Geniune leather has a distinct organic smell—earthy, slightly animal-like. Synthetics smell plasticky or chemical. Touch the material: real leather feels warm and develops a patina. Synthetic cools quickly and stays uniform.
Water and Flex Tests
Drop water on an inconspicuous spot. Real leather absorbs slowly; synthetics bead up. Bend the material sharply. Genuine leather creases naturally and recovers; fake leather often cracks visibly or shows white stress marks along folds.
Check the Edges
Look at cut edges and seams. Real leather shows natural fibers, slight variation, and ages visibly. Synthetic edges are uniform, plastic-looking, or have a painted-on finish that looks applied. On designer bags, authentic pieces rarely have rough edges—they're finished, but you can still see natural material structure underneath.
Interior Hardware and Construction
Real leather interiors wear naturally over time. Check where handles attach: genuine leather shows stress marks and natural distress. Synthetics show uniform wear patterns or no wear at all.
