How Can You Spot Cheap Hardware From Across the Room?

Color and Finish
Cheap hardware looks plastic-like or overly shiny. Quality metal has depth—you can see into it rather than just seeing reflection off it. Gold-plated hardware should look warm and natural, not bright yellow. Silver should have subtle warmth, not clinical coldness.
Weight in Your Hand
Pick the piece up. Low-quality hardware makes bags feel hollow or light in a way that doesn't match the material. Quality hardware has noticeable weight. This is the fastest reality check: the piece should feel substantial, not like you're holding an empty shell.
Edges and Joins
Look where hardware connects to leather or fabric. Cheap hardware has rough edges, visible glue, or seams that don't sit flush. Quality hardware is integrated cleanly. Zippers should glide smoothly without catching. Clasps should click with a satisfying resistance, not feel loose or sticky.
Tarnishing and Patina
Quality metal develops patina—it darkens or oxidizes predictably. Cheap hardware tarnishes unevenly, flakes, or turns colors it shouldn't. If a piece is supposedly new but the hardware looks weathered unpredictably, that's a sign.
